February Luncheon a Great Success!
HIMSS Advocacy and Advancement
On February 11th, our chapter met for yet another excellent networking and learning opportunity. About 42 of our members joined together for networking, education, and food at our February 11th luncheon.
Board Members Michele Mills and Michel Erdmann gave an insightful update on the advocacy opportunities in Utah and nationally. Their presentation includes many links to regularly updated resources for local and national legislature in consideration.

UHIMSS President Joel Meyer presented on the HIMSS advancement process. If you are interested in applying to become a HIMSS Senior or Fellow, Joel is happy to answer questions. In addition it doesn’t hurt to spend some time as a volunteer on the board. Elections are in June!

Recap of our Winter Social
held December 4th
The UHIMSS annual Winter Social has become a holiday tradition for chapter members. The event is a special evening of fine dining and socializing with colleagues.

| The buffet and cheer were plentiful
|
This year was yet another fine evening. Hosted at the Little America hotel, participants dined on a spectacular holiday buffet. We enjoyed each others' company to the sounds of classical guitarist Michael Lucarelli.
Our vendor sponsor Accuvant raffled a brand new digital camera that made a great stocking stuffer.
Mark your calendar now for next year’s UHIMSS winter social -- December 3rd! More details will follow.
KLAS Research Articles
Aggregation and Real-time Location Systems
We are pleased to provide synopses from KLAS Research regarding two recently published studies.
Beyond the CIS: Why are hospitals buying aggregation solutions?
Providers are investing in aggregation solutions to solve any of five key problems: Frustrated physicians, downtime, accessing information across care venues, core measures and changing reporting requirements and getting information where and when it is needed. No solution has yet been shown to aggregate data in such a way that a physician or clinician can take immediate action from the information presented and enter an order, chart care, or enter a progress note into the aggregation solution. Click here to read more regarding Aggregation Services.
RTLS (Real-time Location Systems) Perception Study 2009
Since 2005, several prominent industry surveys have suggested that a significant percentage of providers would be implementing RTLS technology within the next two years, yet we have only seen very modest growth. There appears to be a direct correlation between provider size and adoption. Click here to read more regarding RTLS.
Thanks to our Sponsors
We would like to thank our sponsors: Motorola, Accuvant, and Tipping Point. Thanks to our sponsors, we are able to deliver our educational luncheons at no-cost to our members. If we get a couple more sponsors, we will be able to lower the Spring Conference fees, as well.

Frank C. Overfelt, FACHE, FHIMSS, is receiving the 2008 Lifetime Member Award and John T. Hansmann, CPHIMS, FHIMSS, is receiving the 2008 Board of Directors Service Award.
HIMSS will recognize both of them at the 2009 Annual HIMSS Conference in Chicago on April 4th. Congratulations from all of your fellow chapter members!
Click here to read the press release announcing all HIMSS 2008 Awards Recipients.
Recipients will be honored at the Awards Banquet in conjunction with the HIMSS09 Annual Conference. Visit the HIMSS website for more information on the Awards Banquet.
The Stimulus Package, American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, was signed by President Obama on February 17, 2009. It includes $19.2 billion in provisions for healthcare information technology (health IT).
HIMSS has many resources to help members wade through the mounds of paper that have and will arrive as a result of the bill. HIMSS established the Office of Advocacy and Public Policy in February 2000 to help put more focus on expanding the organization's visibility on Capital Hill. This office provides tools, resources, research, education, and networking to bring value to healthcare professionals.
Stay on top of current stimulus package and advocacy efforts by going to himss.org - Advocacy & Public Policy. Or go directly to Stimulus Package information.
As a new service to our membership, we have been highlighting local companies that provide Healthcare IT services or products. Many of us are so busy delivering quality services to our customers, that we are not often aware of the other great organizations in our own backyard.
If you would like to have your company highlighted, please send an email to joel.meyer@utah-himss.org.
Have you ever wondered how many peers you have in our Utah Chapter? Have you ever wanted to know more about the general makeup of our chapter and the job titles of our membership?
If so, click here for more information regarding demographics of our membership. We currently have 150 chapter members.
